Proofreader II (Office of the Historian)
Background:
Kent, Campa and Kate Incorporated (KCK) is a federal contracting company that provides professional services to Government Agencies. We are currently seeking candidates for a Proofreader II (Office of the Historian) position supporting at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center (NFATC), formerly Foreign Service Institute (FSI).
This posting is for a part-time position, anticipated up to 30 hours per week.
Requirements:
- Experience Minimum: Minimum of 10 years' experience in editing manuscripts related to U.S. foreign relations.
- Education Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent years of experience (in addition to experience minimum).
- Must possess a high school diploma, U.S. Citizenship, and fluency in the English Language.
- Thorough knowledge of the general history of the United States, world history, and major recent developments in U.S. foreign policy;
- Thorough knowledge of the structure of the Department of State and of other agencies concerned with foreign affairs;
- Thorough knowledge of standard English grammar, punctuation, and diction; excellent writing, spelling, and proofreading ability;
- Thorough knowledge of established editing reference manuals and guidelines, including the GPO Style Manual and FRUS Style Guide;
- Thorough knowledge of publication standards and procedures to prepare documents for publication;
- Preferable: Work experience in an educational or training institute.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Verifies the text of typeset pages (including all headers, signatures, and footnotes) ensures conformity with the edited manuscript and with Government Publishing Office (GPO) and Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS)style guides;
- Ensures consistency of style and information with each document;
- Verifies the proper placement of all footnote references;
- Checks all cross-references in volumes;
- Marks page proofs with GPO proofreading symbols as required;
- Suggests additional footnotes as needed for clarity;
- Applies expert knowledge of editorial standards to prepare unclassified manuscripts for the typesetting process.
